Spray drying chamber in operation: the concentrate is atomised and dries in seconds, with a sanitary finish on every product contact surface.

What your plant makes

Every dairy product calls for a different line: the evaporation surface, the maximum temperature the product takes and the way it is atomised all change.

Whole and skim milk

Concentration up to the solids the product takes, then spray drying to the bulk density and solubility your customer specifies.

Whey and permeate

High volume, low solids: the evaporator sets the cost of the line. Lactose crystallisation is built in where the product calls for it.

Protein concentrates and isolates

Heat-sensitive products: short residence time and tight control of inlet and outlet air.

Lactose and derivatives

Pre-evaporation, crystallisation and drying, with fines handling and recovery.

Dulce de leche and dessert powders

High-sugar products that turn sticky when hot: chamber, cooling and sweeping are designed around that.

Effluents and by-products

Concentration of dilute streams to cut volume, recover solids and lower treatment cost.

The line, stage by stage

1

Reception and conditioning

Standardisation, heat treatment and preheating of the product before it enters the evaporator.

2

Falling film concentration

Most of the water is removed at the lowest energy cost: one, two or three effects, with thermal vapour recompression (TVR) depending on the energy available at the plant.

3

Spray drying

The concentrate is atomised by disc or nozzle and dries in seconds. This is where final moisture, bulk density and particle size are set.

4

Finishing and powder handling

Fluid bed, cyclone or bag filter separation, conveying, cooling and packing, integrated with the plant CIP.

Why it pays to concentrate before drying

Evaporating water inside the spray dryer is the most expensive way to remove it: air has to be heated and then thrown away. In a falling film evaporator the vapour generated is reused in the next effect or recompressed. So in a dairy plant every point of solids the evaporator gains turns into less energy and more output from the dryer you already have. Work out the saving on your line.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth concentrating milk before drying it?

Yes. Evaporating a kilogram of water in a multiple-effect falling film evaporator, or one with thermal vapour recompression, uses a fraction of the energy needed to evaporate that same kilogram inside the spray dryer. That is why a dairy line is almost always evaporator plus dryer: the evaporator removes most of the water and the dryer delivers the finished powder.

What data do you need to quote a line?

The product, the feed rate, inlet and outlet solids, the final moisture wanted in the powder, the energy available at the plant and the hygiene requirements. From that we size the evaporation surface, the evaporation capacity of the dryer and the ancillary equipment.

Can an installed dryer or evaporator be upgraded?

Yes, even if it was built by someone else. We run an on-site diagnosis with a mass and energy balance and propose the mechanical uprating, the automation and the replacement of the components that cap output or drive consumption.

Can the product be trialled before buying the machine?

Yes. Real samples are processed on a pilot plant to obtain drying curves and powder characteristics, and the industrial machine is then scaled up from measured data.
