They use water to capture the fine dust that passes the cyclones of a spray or flash dryer. The air leaves clean to the atmosphere and the solution containing the product is reprocessed or sent to treatment.
Gas scrubbers remove or recover the dust particles carried by the drying air of a flash or spray dryer, by means of a water spray. They are placed after the cyclones: the cyclones recover most of the product and the scrubber captures the fines they cannot trap.
The air can carry between 0.1 and 1 % of production, depending on the product, and becomes a pollutant, even more so with harmful products such as herbicides. The particles remain in the water droplets; the solution is reprocessed or goes to effluent treatment and the clean air leaves to the atmosphere. The water can carry additives that increase capture.
The Venturi scrubber accelerates the air to generate turbulence and intimate contact with the finely atomised water. Scrubbing towers are vertical cylinders with ceramic, plastic or steel packing, with the water flowing counter-current to the air.
Fines are reprocessed instead of being lost.
The air leaves clean to the atmosphere.
Depending on the dust, the flow rate and the destination of the water.
They are worthwhile in spray and flash dryers where the fine dust has value or is a pollutant, or when the plant must reduce its emissions. We size them according to the product, the air flow rate and the destination of the scrubbing water.
