How the vibrating fluid bed works

The vibrating fluid bed, or vibro-fluidiser, is one of the most widely used units for drying powders. It can be the only drying stage, although it normally works as a finisher at the outlet of a spray drying chamber.

It has a closed horizontal body: the product enters at one end and leaves at the other. Inside, a perforated plate receives the product and the drying air rises through it, passing through the layer and keeping it in suspension as it advances. The layer should not exceed about 15 cm: a greater thickness is difficult to fluidise, increases the pressure drop and is hard to homogenise.

Eccentric vibrating motors, with the unit mounted on springs, generate a vibration that stirs the product, improves heat transfer and moves it forward. It is common to divide it into two drying sections at different temperatures and one cooling section, so that the product is ready for packing.

Final drying and cooling

In a single unit, with independent sections.

Homogeneous product

Vibration and air keep the bed in suspension.

Spray finisher

Completes drying at the chamber outlet.

When it pays off

It is the right choice to finish drying powders that leave a spray dryer with some moisture, to agglomerate or cool before packing, or as the main dryer for granular products that fluidise well.
