Shell-and-tube evaporator that works by thermosiphon: the liquid rises through the tubes driven by the vapour generated, with no product pumps between effects. We design and manufacture it to measure, on its own or combined with other evaporation stages.
Rising film evaporators are of the shell-and-tube type: the product flows inside the tubes and the steam on the shell side, heating their walls. They were the first evaporators to be designed.
They work by thermosiphon. The liquid enters at the bottom and rises along the tube walls, driven by the density difference between the hot liquid and the vapour formed on contact with the hot walls. At the top, in the separator, the vapours are separated from the concentrate.
The concentrate can pass entirely to the next effect, or part of it can be recirculated in the same effect and the rest sent on. To achieve intense evaporation and good turbulence, a large temperature difference between steam and liquid is used; with small differences the transfer coefficient is low.
The liquid passes from one effect to the next without transfer pumps.
The steam-liquid temperature difference drives the circulation.
In the order of 6 to 7 m, shorter than in a falling film.
Today it is used in fewer applications than the falling film, which achieves better transfer coefficients and less fouling with small temperature differences. It is worth evaluating when simplicity without pumps between effects is sought, or when the product and the available temperature difference allow it.
